I tried my first augmented reality lesson. We are working on words with the "ar" spelling pattern so The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds fits right in since it's about an artist. The story is about a girl who thinks she can not draw only to find out that once unleashed, her creativity takes her farther than she ever imagined. This is a story that fits right into my group of kiddos since many express frustration at certain tasks such as writing or some of the challenging math concepts we work on. We read the story, discussed some higher level thinking type questions (written on dots of course), and then illustrated our own dots (printed from http://colarapp.com/). We used the coLAR app to make our illustrations literally jump off the page. The kids were so excited to see their work in 3-D. I think we will also use this app to practice spelling and high-frequency words. I plan to connect this lesson to our individual SMART goals as well!
